{"id":911,"date":"2023-09-25T14:04:47","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T18:04:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nsbswf.com\/?p=911"},"modified":"2024-03-29T15:30:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T19:30:49","slug":"jessie-abbey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nsbswf.com\/?p=911","title":{"rendered":"Jessie Abbey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At the crossroads of comfortable certainty and immeasurable risk, Jessie Abbey took a leap of faith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">She left behind a steady job that she enjoyed in order to focus on her music full time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Her sojourn into uncharted waters is catalogued in her late-2016 EP \u201cThe Deep and the Sea,\u201d a five-song folk-rock foray into a fresh, freedom-fueled state of mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Abbey, 29, recorded the album in Daytona Beach with producer Clayton Sturgeon soon after relocating with her husband, Blake, to the east coast from her native Sacramento. But the inspiration for her first solo outing, which debuted at No. 7 on the iTunes Alternative Folk chart, has been building for a decade.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-fl-daytonabeach-C6724-native-article_link-entertainment-events-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-google-query-id=\"CM7z2eHHy4EDFdOpgwgdw60CzA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/fl-daytonabeach-C6724\/native-article_link\/entertainment\/events_0__container__\">At 19, she found herself on a precipice, with a course-altering decision to make: Dive full time into music, or keep a traditional job and abandon all hopes of a creative career.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Looking back now, it seems a passionate pursuit of music was inevitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Abbey\u2019s grandmother was Japanese and urged her children to excel in one of the arts of her culture. Abbey&#8217;s mother, born in San Francisco, chose to play the koto, a 13-string, 6-foot-long Japanese instrument, and spent part of her 20s in intense training in Japan.\u00a0Abbey\u2019s father plays guitar and drums, and his siblings are musicians as well.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-fl-daytonabeach-C6724-native-article_link-entertainment-events-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"2\" data-google-query-id=\"CLOz9-LHy4EDFWCXgwgdLmkO4Q\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/fl-daytonabeach-C6724\/native-article_link\/entertainment\/events_1__container__\">\u201cI think it\u2019s just in my blood,\u201d Abbey said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201c(I knew) all along I needed to give myself room to breathe and be creative. I was suffocating myself with doing all these other things that I liked but that weren\u2019t beneficial to my music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">That internal struggle became song lyrics, and that song ultimately grew into the title track on her EP.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\">\n<div class=\"container\">\u201cIt was almost like a letter to myself to just let it go and focus on what I needed to focus on,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThis ship has sailed,\u201d the album\u2019s opening verse proclaims. \u201cI won\u2019t change my mind. I\u2019m leaving for good, dear, and I mean it this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s about sailing away from land and something that\u2019s holding you back, and then looking out to the horizon and not necessarily knowing exactly what it looks like on the other side of the world but knowing you\u2019re being called there,\u201d said Abbey.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-fl-daytonabeach-C6724-native-article_link-entertainment-events-4\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\" data-x-c=\"3\">The song is a gateway to the record&#8217;s remaining tracks, and a lens through which she views the future. She\u2019s living out her dream, sure, but it\u2019s an ongoing pursuit.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt was applicable to my struggles at the time (I wrote it), but it\u2019s a constant reminder of staying on the path to freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The theme of the album, she said, is forward motion \u2014 never going back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Stylistically it\u2019s Americana-adjacent, minus the banjo-tinged bluegrass twang. It is by turns \u201chaunting and moody\u201d but still \u201cquirky and fun. I feel like it\u2019s a hopeful melancholy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Abbey also\u00a0is a co-founder with her husband of Musical Charis, a band that fluctuates between two and 10 members at any given show, depending on the venue.
